Staff Development for
 21st Century Teachers

The Bavaria Educational Technologists and Information Specialists were involved in an ambitious staff development project this year. They offered about 50 courses for college credit to over 400 DoDEA teachers from the Bavaria School District to as far away as West Point, New York. Almost all of the courses were built to use the expertise of the ET’s and IS’s to assist the classroom teacher in engaging the students in technology projects. The courses taken by the participant teachers positively influenced the higher level thinking skills of roughly 8,000 students this year.

Hundreds of student projects have been posted on the DoDEA Intranet. DoDEA teachers shared the students’ exceptional creations with other DoDEA teachers. To make this possible, ET’s built INTRAnet sites for their schools. The teachers used these sites to showcase students’ projects where technology had been infused into the curriculum.

One of the biggest initiatives was the Creativity Software Project, where 20 courses were offered each nine weeks during second semester. The courses were planned with the intent of offering job embedded training to the Bavaria District teachers. During these courses teachers received training on Backward Design and standards based instruction. The highlight of the courses for the teachers and the students was the project-based learning module where the students were actively involved with technology.

Technology was used as a tool so that students learned traditional content that was engaging as well as rigorous. The lessons provided new and motivating challenges to inspire excellence in education and offered the students more individual depth of learning. Students were involved in creating projects that challenged their thinking, writing skills, problem-solving skills, and organization. The projects involved traditional tasks but used technology appropriate for the 21st century.

“Thousands of DoDEA students benefited from their teachers’ continuing staff development through collaboration with the Bavaria Educational Technologists and Information Specialists. The Creativity Software Project is just one of the ways the Bavaria District has shown its dedication to ‘highest student achievement’,” stated Dr. Joan Islas, Bavaria District Assistant Superintendent.
