Integrating Math and Literature in the Elementary School Transcript

The elementary curriculum is packed with a multitude of standards.  Teachers have always found it difficult to address all standards.

Over the past decade teachers have successfully integrated the standards from literature and mathematics.  Time is used more effectively when teachers integrate the curriculum.

As part of the Bavaria District Elementary Math Initiative, workshops are being developed on integrating children’s literature and mathematics concepts.

Teachers identify the appropriate mathematics and literature standards, design an appropriate assessment, and then develop activities to support the standards being taught.

This is a much more fun and effective way for teachers to teach and students to learn.

 Begin Student Interview (Boy):

"I really like it when teachers read so I get to do the math and I get to hear funny stories. That's pretty much what I like about it."

End Student Interview (Boy)

Begin Student Interview (Girl):

"Reading is fun and you get much smarter. Math is fun too, but if you put reading and math together, it makes it much funner.”

End Student Interview (Girl)

Begin Interview (Carol Lanigan):

"I think it is exciting for students when they are really able to have literature and a math connection. It enhances---it maximizes the school day. It makes it so that the students are doing both and not realizing that they are involved in both activities. You can really cover a lot in one day if you combine mathematics and literature together.

End Interview (Carol Lanigan):

Publishers have responded to the need of integrating subjects by producing materials that address standards from various curricular areas. The Bavaria District has purchased some of these supplemental materials to support the integration of math and literature.

By exploring mathematics through literature, we are able to increase the amount of time for mathematics instruction as well as provide an excellent method for increasing children’s interest in mathematics.
