Outdoor Education is designed as an experiential program for seventh graders. The education in the adventure curriculum is not theory but hands-on activities where students learn, first-hand, outdoor and cooperative skills. Through this program and its philosophies, students learn not only individual skills but how to work as a team and solve various problems. Student Audio: "Thirteen... Fourteen..." End Student Audio The group here is solving the problem of how to get the complete group to the raft without anyone being left behind. The project requires the team to use their strengths as well as accommodate for their weaknesses. Interview David Gray: "We have a lot of activities that we have introduced to the students, such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and rock climbing, We also based a lot of activities on team building and cooperation. These are things that they can use in High School or in their daily life and when they get older an go into the business world." End Interview Students learn traditional activities, such as alpine hiking, the use of a map and compass, the practicality of layering their clothing, and carrying food and drink. Another skill learned is using a Global Positioning System. Instructor Audio: The GPS uses satellites. Now they have arranged satellites. I think that the U.S. put up satellites about 1960 or around there, and they did that so people could know where they are, if in the event that you couldn't use a compass for whatever reason. Let's say if you were in a tank. A tank is made of metal. A compass isn't accurate in a tank because it is made of metal. End Instructor Audio Using a GPS, students locate clues and items hidden by their instructor in a treasure hunt. Through these activities, the students learn teamwork, leadership, and the enjoyment of accomplishing a common goal. |
