The Bavaria District, along with DoDEA in support of the community strategic plan Goal 1 High Student Achievement for all students, has implemented READ180, a reading support program, for struggling High School readers in grades 9 through 12.

The Bavaria District has also implemented a pilot READ 180 program at Grafenwoehr Elementary School for students in grades 4-6.

Interview with Mary Zimmerman-Bayer:

"What we have observed since we have started the program at this school is that the students love it, they’re already making progress, the teachers are seeing almost daily progress, parents are happy to have their kids in the program, and we have a waiting list of other students that we want to join the program, so it’s off to a great start."

End of Interview

Read 180 was developed by Scholastic, in collaboration with Vanderbilt University, to help struggling students break out of the reading failure cycle and turn their lives around.

READ 180 — a balanced technology and print program —builds essential reading skills and develops fluency through a variety of supported-reading experiences.

These experiences include whole group and small group instruction, modeled and independent reading, and individualized technology.

Read 180 is designed to adjust reading instruction to move students to grade level.

It provides practice and application of skills in multiple contexts as it supports and motivates students to become lifelong readers and learners.
