The Bavaria Digital Video Initiative and the 98th ASG broadcast the Bavaria District’s high school graduations live to the students’ deployed parents in Iraq. The 1st Infantry Division Commander, Major General Batiste, wanted all deployed members in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) to view the high school graduations of their loved ones. The 98th ASG Information Management Office (IMO) in conjunction with the 1st ID Rear Automation (G6) decided upon an IP-based webcast to meet the Commanding General’s intent. Larry Robinson, IMO, directed the setup and training, and Thomas Smart, 1ID G6, provided technical coordination using donated vendor support for the satellite bandwidth and streaming video using QuickTime compression. Interview with Larry Robinson: "We are supporting our troops and that's why we are here, to provide our little piece to help the moral and welfare. We wish Godspeed to all of the soldiers in Operation Iraqi Freedom." End Interview With this solution soldiers who were deployed only needed access to a computer connected to the network to watch their children graduate. Students from the Bavaria District , through the Professional Technical Studies program of Video Production, applied their knowledge to produce a real life project. They worked collaboratively with the satellite team to provide the video stream of the graduations to soldiers downrange. The student teams worked simultaneously on three projects: the live broadcast, a taped broadcast for AFN, and a DVD project for the deployed parents. The students were able to showcase their learning through these projects by performing the same skills as a professional team. They set up camera shots and organized the placement of the cameras for a variety of shots. They successfully accomplished the VTC and the TV productions of these graduation ceremonies. Because of the Digital Video Initiative, the students involved performed as a professional team and made this project a complete success. |
