Guided Reading is an approach to reading instruction that allows children to demonstrate their control over text. It leads them to understand that reading is a process of actively reconstructing an author's meaning.

Guided Reading enables you to group children with similar needs so that the task is neither too easy nor too difficult for anyone. It allows the teacher to assist children to predict their way through the text, then check, confirm, and, if necessary, correct those predictions themselves.

A small group of children reads multiple copies of the same text under the teacher's guidance. The text is one the children can almost, but not quite, read on their own, and supports their practice of a reading strategy.

Guided Reading is a way to help children understand how reading works and learn techniques to figure out words and comprehend texts that are just a little too challenging for them to read without support.
