In response to the assistance needed to fully implement and achieve the goals and objectives of Goal 1 of DoDEA’s Community Strategic Plan and the Bavaria District Improvement Plan the position of Literacy Coach has been implemented in 10 elementary schools in the district.

As we begin our second year of our reading initiative, this powerful new component, Literacy Coach, has been added to the Bavaria District Reading Initiative.

The role of the Literacy Coach is to work directly in the classroom with both the classroom teacher.

and the students to provide and assist with reading instruction, modeling and use of the most effective reading practices

Literacy Coaches work in collaboration with the classroom teacher to:

 ·         identify those students most at risk and plan and design appropriate instruction matched to the needs of each student,

 ·         plan and prepare lessons to model and demonstrate balanced literacy strategies.  A balanced literacy program includes reading and writing to, with, and by children,

 ·         assist with classroom management techniques by creating the optimum literacy rich environment that will enhance learning and support reading development, and

 ·        collect and monitor data on an ongoing basis, realigning instruction as needed and as indicated by the assessment results.

Through the services provided by the Literacy Coaches, we feel that reading success for all is rapidly becoming more than just a vision for the children of the Bavaria District but rather a realistic and attainable goal.
