With the
enactment of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of
1997, greater attention to inclusion of students with special needs in the
general education classroom has been mandated.
This mandate is
to ensure that children with disabilities are educated to the maximum extent
appropriate in the least restrictive environment.
In response to
this mandate, The Bavaria District Special Education Cluster group was
formed to identify and address special education issues within the
district.
This resulted in
the creation of the TIPS program. (pause) Teaching Inclusionary Practices
for Students.
The goal of the
TIPS program is to support educators in providing inclusive education for
special needs students. Jan Osier, the TIPS coordinator for the Bavaria
District, works directly with educators to provide training, coaching,
modeling, and assistance with inclusionary practices in the classroom.
The TIPS program provides
educators with
· Instruction and
implementation of a variety of models of inclusive education.
· Guidance on providing
modifications and accommodations to guarantee access to the general
curriculum for all special needs students.
· Identification and teaching
of learning strategies for students in the classroom AND
· Current research and best
practices in instruction for inclusive education.
Inclusive
education is the way for all students in a school to become part of the
school community. We know that children who learn together, learn to live
together.
The Bavaria
District through the TIPS program seeks to empower educators with the tools
needed for successful inclusive education.
