| Math Matters: Exemplary Mathematics Transcript | ||
|
Our schools offer a comprehensive mathematical program for students pre-kindergarten through grade 12. Curriculum standards, effective instructional strategies, and on-going assessment of student progress are essential components of the math program. Within an exemplary mathematics classroom, lessons are directly related to one or more of the content standards, and there is a variety of materials used to meet the standards. Within these classrooms, there is also an opportunity for students to construct knowledge. For example: this teacher is addressing Functions and Algebra Concepts. Teacher Instructing: "Let's say that they are here.. you have to pardon my drawing... the road is coming up at a gradient. They are looking up this road. They are going to try to find the angle that this is (teacher points to small angle in the triangle). This little telescope that they are looking through lets them find this length, this length, and this length. They can then use these trig functions to find the angle. They will then say this is a six percent grade, a 10 percent grade, a twenty percent grade." End Instruction The lesson reflects active engagement by all students, includes multiple examples, modeling and practice. There is evidence of differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all learners. This activity promotes connections between the concepts addressed and students’ prior knowledge. Also, the students are working on a “real-life” problem. Student progress is continually monitored and guides the instruction. Student progress is measured in a variety of ways to include homework, projects, demonstrations and traditional tests. Within the exemplary mathematics classroom, routines and procedures help students to efficiently accomplish tasks, and the teacher creates a supportive climate that fosters learning. Through focusing on curriculum standards, engaging instruction, various assessments and a conducive environment, we have the tools to increase the number of exemplary mathematical classrooms. |
